Sibiling Success: Two Success Stories in One Family

Jacob and Tucker Hartlaub

A success story from a client at The Vision Therapy Center: Both my boys have gone through vision therapy and have developed into AWESOME readers. Please understand there is way more to vision than eyesight, so don't get stuck in the trap of saying "My child's vision is good, we had that checked." We were created in a complex way by an amazing God.

My 10 year old had glasses prescribed, which we found he did not need after vision therapy. The doctor who prescribed them told me there is NOTHING to that 'vision therapy stuff.' I DISAGREE!!!!

My 10 year old went through vision therapy because he was having trouble reading during first grade. He could not read. We found out later it was because the words were swimming on the page and literally making him sick. He could read, but it took a lot of work and it made him VERY tired. He always seemed tired but was getting enough sleep. He was flipping letters and numbers and just could not remember which way to write some letters to make the word correct (B and D) mostly.

He was beginning to say he was stupid and generally felt poorly about himself because the other kids (in school at the time) could do what he could not. We really had concern for him.

We found out about The Vision Therapy Center and found relief. It was hard work but now he is doing really well. He still hates writing because he is worried about spelling. Due to his vision problems he got behind in written spelling. He is good orally but not written. He is learning to like (that is a stretch) to write since I do not stress the spelling until the final draft.

My youngest son (now eight) was much worse. He totally stopped sitting with me to read a book and if he did he would NOT look at the book. He literally began to RUN away from me when I asked him to read with me. He loved to write and did very well but could not sit to read. He could listen and answer any questions but he could not, no, WOULD NOT, read it himself. He always looked at the written word with his head tilted or covered one eye. This is a prime symptom of a vision problem. He has 20/20 eyesite and always has, but he could not focus due to his vision. He is wearing glasses with a bifocal to help his eyes learn to focus near and far.

My son went from a child who literally RAN from the written word to a kid who said just last week, "Mommy, I want to read a book to you!" I was amazed to tears.

Both of my sons had totally different problems, they both have graduated from vision therapy, and they both are reading well now. In fact, the 10 year old is hard to get to stop reading when it is time to move on. I praise God for someone taking the time to tell me about vision therapy because it changed who my kids are today!!!

I hope this helps you. If you're not in their area, perhaps they can help you find a doctor in your area. Remember not every eye doctor knows and understands vision therapy. It is real and it is worth every penny you may have to pay out of pocket. It will be worth the trip to find out if this is the problem with your son or daughter's reading/learning.

Blessings,

Karen Hartlaub
